Short abstract
The Irritable Bowel Questionnaire is the German translation of the English Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (GSRS-IBS; Wiklund et al., 2003) and serves to record the individually perceived symptom burden in patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome as well as a supplement to the categorical diagnosis of an assessment of subjective burden. It can also be used as a research instrument. The procedure comprises 13 items, which are assigned to four subscales: (1) Feel of fullness, (2) diarrhoea, (3) constipation, (4) pain and tension. Reliability: Satisfactory reliability (internal consistency) was demonstrated both in a sample of irritable bowel patients and in an overall sample of clinically relevant and non-clinical cases (Cronbach's Alpha > .72). Validity: With regard to the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome, the criterion validity is considered to be given. There are also convergent validities to the gastrointestinal scales of the GBB-24.
